Chapter 7

Ain’t No Cure for the Summertime Blues

The summer was torture for Katie. Unsure of what was going on with Nick, she would rush home in order to hear him enter his apartment in the evening. She promised herself that as long as she heard his door, she knew he was okay, and this would be worth it.

“Katie, you’ve been depressed for weeks,” Andy said, while they were driving around. They were officially both cleared to return to full-duty that morning, so Chief sent them out for patrol.

“I’m sorry,” she sighed, looking out the window.

“You’ve lost your spunk. I’ve purposely set you up for some slams, only to have you apologize or say something sensitive. I’m worried about you.”

“Thanks, but I’ll be fine.”

“I don’t know about that.”

“Please, can’t we talk about something other than Nick?”

“Okay. Your two-year stint ends in January. Are you going to Quantico?”

“Of course.”

“When you graduate Quantico, what unit are you going to go on?”

Katie spun her head toward Andy, wide-eyed.

“Ahhh, got ya. You didn’t think about that one, did you?”

“No,” she admitted. “What am I going to do? Do I go to another unit? Should I request another unit?”

“That’s a question only you can answer. Good news is if you go in January, you have until the end of May to figure it out. Training for Quantico is what? Twenty weeks?”

“Yes.”

“Well, you’ve got several months to figure it out. Personally, I think you should at least talk to Nick and see if you can work together.”

“I can’t.”

“Why not?” he asked, taken aback by her response.

“Why not, what?”

“Why can’t you talk to him?”

“I just can’t.”

Pulling into Cook’s Café for lunch, Andy continued to push. “Why not? Just because you broke up with the guy doesn’t mean you can’t talk to him.”

“Andy, please trust me when I say I can’t. I would love to tell you why, but I can’t.”

“Fine,” he said, getting out, slamming his door. “Let’s go eat.”

Katie played with her lunch, eating only the little she knew she had to in order to function. All in all, she calculated that she had dropped a good fifteen pounds through the summer.

“You’re not looking healthy. Maybe you should consider another job if it’s putting this much stress on you,” Seb pointed out as he delivered their meal.

“I’ll be fine. It’s not the job anyway.”

“It’s her and Nick,” Andy added. “They broke up.”

“Really? I was wondering why you’ve been so silent,” he said, pulling a chair over to the end of their table, sitting down. “What have you been doing with yourself when you’re not at work?”

“Good question. What have you been doing?” Andy asked.

Katie shrugged. “You know…drawing, church, things like that.”

“Do you not see him in church?” Seb probed.

“No. He goes to the first service, so I go to the second.”

“Interesting. Are you avoiding him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it hurts. Why are you sitting here? Don’t you have a job to do?” she scowled.

“I do, but that’s one of the perks about owning half the business. I have other people to do the work when I need to step out for a few.
